I’m impressed with Tommy Bowden. Seriously.

Published by Wes under Uncategorized

One of the characteristics that impresses me most is a teachable heart. Proverbs seems to be full of admonisions to learn from others (e.g., Pr. 1:5) and to not be wise in our own eyes (e.g., Pr. 3:7). I like what Tommy Bowden did Monday in response to the Saturday night smackdown: link. I hope they win more games as a result.

I wonder who Fulmer called. :-)

How does Woot do it?

Published by Wes under Uncategorized

Today my six pieces of super cheap luggage ($39.99) shipped. Woot only charges $5 for all shipments. I noticed that the bags weigh 25 lbs. in total. So, I went to the FedEx website to see how much shipping would be from Carrollton, TX (Woot) to Tuscaloosa, AL. I can’t figure out how they only charge $5 for all 5,000 people that ordered the luggage. Here are the shipping rates.

Oops.

Published by Wes under Uncategorized

While teaching Friday I was trying to make the point that television had changed dramatically since I was a kid. We had four channels (ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS) and most of the students in class said they had over 400 channels.

I said, “That’s because you were born in the eighties.” Blank stares. “Raise your hand if you were born in the eighties.” Three or four hands raised.

Yep, most of my students were born in 1990.

“Time keeps on ticking, ticking, ticking, into the future…”

The birthday fairy

Published by Wes under Uncategorized

For my birthday Tina bought me a Syma Fairy remote control helicopter. Woot sold almost 15,000 of them one day for $9.99.

The kids and I have loved it. So far it has been a little tricky to figure out the controls. To illustrate my point, I had to spend a few minutes this morning cutting Alina’s hair out of the propellor.

Here’s a video of it in action:

How to not really apologize 101

Published by Wes under Uncategorized

I’m not a Democrat or a Republican, but communication interests me, including spin. I don’t want to beat a guy while he is down, but this is an exceptionally bad admission of guilt.

For two years now, John Edwards has adamantly denied being unfaithful to his wife. Below is the statement released today by John Edwards about his affair. Part of what makes it so bad is that many times he said claims of his affair were “false”, “untrue”, and “made-up”. I also included some translations just for kicks.

“In 2006, I made a serious error in judgment (sin) and conducted myself in a way that was disloyal to my family (completely unfaithful) and to my core beliefs (acts everyone views as immoral). I recognized my mistake (got caught) and I told my wife that I had a liaison with another woman (adultery), and I asked for her forgiveness. Although I was honest (stopped lying just to my family) in every painful detail with my family, I did not tell the public (repeatedly swore on the record that it wasn’t true). When a supermarket tabloid (publication) told a version of the story (got some of it right), I used the fact (took advantage) that the story contained many falsities to deny it. But being 99 percent honest (lying) is no longer enough (was it ever?).”
