4th of July - part 1

I hope that you all had a very nice 4th. Ours was great!! It was the best day of summer, so far. Part of what made it so good was that we got to spend the entire day with Wes. What a treat!! The fun started with the kiddos enjoying the Slip-N-Slide. Lyndal has been asking to use it all summer, but we just now dug it out of the garage. They had a blast!!!!

We had a rather unusual lunch - lobster tail, crab legs and shrimp. Isn't that a weird thing to eat on the 4th? We had actually wanted to have lobster when we studied lobsters at the end of 2nd grade, but it was a bit expensive. We went by Publix to buy a watermelon on the 3rd and they had a ton of their seafood 1/2 off!! 1/2 off fits the budget. :0) Wes was the only one that cared for the lobster and crab. Lyndal and I loved the shrimp.

We finished the meal with the very American Ben & Jerry's. :0) A total splurge day that was VERY yummy! :0)

How did you spend your 4th?

Check back tomorrow for part 2.

3rd Grade & Art

Lyndal is in 3rd grade this year. I still can't believe it!! We are continuing on with most of the same curriculum that we used last year. We are using our same art book. It truly is a GREAT book.

Our first artist to pick back up with this year was El Greco. El Greco was known for “stretching” out the people that he painted. Here's an example. Notice how elongated the arms and legs look on this guy.

To see more, click the link.

Lyndal's activity was to draw an elongated figure. First step was to pick out a picture from a magazine. She chose an American Girl doll baby.

Next step was to cut the figure into pieces. Our cutting wound up being pretty symmetrical and therefore our elongation didn't work very well. I think the elongation would have worked better to do only a few cuts on the legs and arms. Live and learn....

Then trace the figure.

Last step was to fill in the outline any way she wanted. Lyndal opted to get really creative and draw the insides. :0) The inner workings of her figure were very complicated. She explained every part to me. :0)

K4

Alina is in 4 year old kindergarten this year. My goals for her are for her to learn her blends, learn to count even higher (she's at about 40 right now), learn more number recognition, learn some basic addition and subtraction and to have lots of fun. I found this neat Christian curriculum to use with her this year called ABC I Believe. I'm not using all of their items or ideas, but I love that everything is already done up for me. All I have to do is print out their templates and fill in my own ideas. For the letter A everything is revolving around ants. For her letter/sound review she had ants with letters written on them. When she gave me the sound she got to put the ant into the ant hill.

Her first set of blends were written on ants.

For her Bible verse page she glued sand to make the ants and letter A look like they were in an ant hill. We talked about how we can learn from watching ants. We talked about how she could do things without being told, just like the ants. We also learned about the different jobs that ants have (the queen ant, the ants that take care of the baby ants, the ants that protect and the ants that find food).

To see more, click the link. She learned about the different parts of an ant.

She also made a list of things that she can do without being told.

No study on ants would be complete without a real ant farm. Here she is putting the special sand into our ant farm.

Here's the farm.

We had the most difficult time catching ants from the yard. We only have 2 big ants that are doing ALL the work in the tunnels. I'm wondering if we need to try and catch some more to help them. All the other ants are just walking around not doing much. We've also had some die.

Day 2 we have a few tunnels.

Alina is starting this book for Bible. Lyndal did it at this same age and loved it. It's like an activity book and stresses skills to be learned at this age (coloring by number, matching, etc.), but is all centered around creation. We have some others about Jesus that we will do this year as well.

Preschool

Cohen is in preschool this year. My goals for him are to have lots of fun, hopefully learn the names of his letters, learn his colors and hopefully learn to do a little bit of counting. He is really, really, really excited about being in school!!!!!!!

Here he is doing some lacing beads. He has had his eye on these for a couple of months now, but I kept telling him he had to wait. He was thrilled to finally use them.

He absolutely loved getting to use the glue stick all by himself to glue apples on to his letter A.

To see more, click the link.

For the color blue he got to use scissors (much to his delight) and cut out blue construction paper. He then used the glue stick to glue the blue pieces of paper to a white sheet.

All of the kiddos are enjoying our new markers. They are all scented. Does anyone else out there remember when these markers came out? I remember them from elementary school. One of the day care workers brought them to show us. I thought they were the coolest thing ever. They all smell so very good.

Enjoying Play-doh.

School house rock

Warning-this post is by Wes. Those of you that read Tina's blog have a ring-side seat on the kids' education. So, as the husband, I'd like to publicly encourage Tina. We got Lyndal's second grade SAT scores back this week. Basically, she's a little more than a grade ahead. Her scores ranged from grade appropriate to sixth grade on a few items. Tina rocks (see Prov. 31).

Good job, Tina and Lyndal, and thanks to all you guys that support Tina and the kids by reading the blog. You rock.

Prayer Request Update

WOW! What an overwhelming response from you guys!!! Thanks so much for the tons of e-mails and prayers that I have received today. God is listening and answering!!!! I found a pharmacy down 69 that has some Heparin. I'm going today to purchase their remaining 10 vials. It won't be fun using their vials, though. Their vials are 1/2 the concentration that I take now, so I will have to double my dosage. The needles that I have won't hold enough to double. Therefore, I will just have to take 2 shots in the morning and 2 shots at night. It won't be fun but I'm not complaining. At least I found some meds. Getting this medicine should get me through to my next OB appt which is July 9th. I should be able to talk to my OB that day about my options. Thanks again for your prayers and outpouring of concern and suggestions.

Prayer Request

I need for you guys to pray for me. I need to get my Heparin refilled and am having problems. I've tried three pharmacy's in town that say there is a shortage and can't get any from the suppliers. One pharmacy told me that there is none to be found in town. They said there is some at the hospital pharmacy but he is not sure how I would go about getting it. Today I will get out the phone book and call every pharmacy for myself. This afternoon I will call my doc office (my reg OB is still on maternity leave). Please pray that God would allow me to find the Heparin somewhere here in town. If that is not His will, please pray that he will give the on-call doc complete wisdom in what new med I should take. Trying a new med makes me very nervous. Heparin has successfully gotten two of our kiddos here. What if a new med doesn't work? I know God's will is perfect and complete, but I really desire for His will to involve getting this little one here safely.
